It's here! All the best for your exams!

To all our superheroes, here are some practical last-minute tips for each area:

📝 General Tips for All Years

Stay Calm & Confident – Remind students that NAPLAN is just a way to check their skills, not a pass-or-fail test.

Read Instructions Carefully – Many mistakes happen because students misread or rush through questions.

Time Management – If stuck, move on and come back later. Don’t waste too much time on one question.

Check Spelling & Grammar – For writing and language questions, review answers before submitting.

📚 Writing Test (Grades 3, 5, 7, 9)

Students may get narrative or persuasive writing, so:

Plan First – Spend a few minutes jotting down ideas. A simple plan can save time.

Use Clear Structure –

  • Narrative: Beginning, Middle, End. Use adjectives and varied sentence structures.

  • Persuasive: Introduction, 3 strong arguments, conclusion.

Use WOW Words – Avoid boring words like "nice" or "good." Instead, try "fantastic" or "excellent."

Punctuation Matters – Use full stops, commas, question marks, and capital letters correctly.

🔹 Grade 3 & 5 Focus: Simple but structured writing, using correct spelling and punctuation.

🔹 Grade 7 & 9 Focus: More complex ideas, strong vocabulary, and persuasive techniques like rhetorical questions.

📖 Reading Test (Grades 3, 5, 7, 9)

Skim First, Then Read in Detail – Get a quick idea of the passage before diving deep.

Look for Keywords – Many answers are hidden in specific sentences.

Eliminate Wrong Answers – If unsure, remove the obviously incorrect ones first.

Pay Attention to Question Types –

  • Literal (Find the answer in the text directly).

  • Inferential (Read between the lines, understand the meaning).

  • Critical (Evaluate the text, author’s purpose, or emotions).

🔹 Grade 3 & 5 Focus: Basic comprehension, finding information directly.

🔹 Grade 7 & 9 Focus: Deeper analysis, inference, and evaluating the author’s point of view.

➗ Numeracy Test (Grades 3, 5, 7, 9)

Memorise Key Facts – Times tables, basic fractions, and percentage conversions.

Estimate First – Helps check if the final answer makes sense.

Watch Out for Traps – Read carefully for words like "least," "most," "difference," etc.

Write Down Working – Helps avoid silly mistakes, especially in multi-step problems.

🔹 Grade 3 & 5 Focus: Basic operations (+, –, ×, ÷), fractions, measurement, simple word problems.

🔹 Grade 7 & 9 Focus: Algebra, problem-solving, probability, percentages, and geometry.

🔡 Conventions of Language (Grades 3, 5, 7, 9)

Check for Spelling Mistakes – Especially tricky words like “their/there/they’re.”

Look at Word Order – Sentences should make sense and flow naturally.

Grammar Rules Matter – Subjects and verbs should agree (e.g., “He runs” not “He run”).

🔹 Grade 3 & 5 Focus: Basic punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure.

🔹 Grade 7 & 9 Focus: Advanced grammar, clauses, and figurative language.
